Socially Conscious Coffee® (SCC) is a nonprofit organization that creates sustainable prosperity with Brazilian coffee harvesters, their families, and their communities through education, health care, and environmental stewardship.

 

 

Behind nearly 400 billion cups of coffee consumed each year is the largest and poorest group of people in the coffee industry:  harvesters and their families.  These harvesters lack education, health care, food, and safe drinking water. This lack of resources, compounded by environmental degradation, causes a continual cycle of illiteracy, poor health and poverty.

 

 

SCC created a model that has proven to be very successful in breaking this cycle. In 2004, SCC built the Centro Rural Educafé in Portuguese, in Bahia, Brazil.  SCC uses this school and community center to educate the region’s children as well as educating the entire community on health and hygiene practices, disease prevention, water and food safety, and environmental stewardship.  As discussed in The Economist magazine, schools in Brazil are improving but too slowly.  SCC is doing everything we can to assist in speeding up the process, one, teacher, one student and one school at a time.
